Proven benefits of angiotensin receptor blockers in the progression of renal disease

Abstract
Angiotensin-receptor blockers are recommended by the American Diabetes Association as first-line treatments for patients with diabetic nephropathy. This recommendation is based on impressive results from a series of clinical trials which reported in 2001 and 2002. The trials showed renal benefits beyond and possibly unrelated to blood-pressure reductions. More such data on protection from cardiovascular outcomes and possible mortality benefits are expected to be provided by the VALUE (Valsartan Long-Term Use Evaluation) trial, which has a high proportion of patients with diabetes and/or proteinuria. This trial is due to report in 2004.
