Preface
Today's cardiology seems mainly focused on risk factor prevention and management of acute syndromes. Angina may be regarded as either the failure of prevention or a suboptimal outcome after acute events. However, epidemiological studies state that many patients' lives continue to be impaired by angina. In this regard, more effective and well-tolerated medical treatment for angina is needed.
In this issue of European Heart Journal Supplements, an original approach for the medical treatment of angina is presented. A thorough revision of existing treatment is also provided. In the past, medical treatment for angina relied mainly on haemodynamic relief of the heart. The new approach moves further by acting on ion currents to improve the energy balance in myocardial cells. Ranolazine, an inhibitor of late sodium current is the main topic of the supplement. Interesting physiological and clinical facts about this treatment are exposed in the issue.
