Preface
Overweight and obesity are becoming so frequent in many parts of the world that they can be considered an actual epidemic. The association between overweight and obesity and an adverse cardiovascular risk profile and a poor general health status is well known. Careful consideration of the benefits of weight loss and interesting insight in new methods to achieve this aim are provided. Recently, pharmacological agents acting on different mechanisms have proved useful to cause weight loss. Promising results about their effect on cardiovascular risk factors are shown, along with a thorough review on the mechanisms of action and safety of sibutramine. Sibutramine is one of these new agents which directly acts on neurally mediated satiety by inhibition of re-uptake of serotonin and noradrenaline. The SCOUT study has been designed to assess its effect on cardiovascular outcome of high-risk patients.
