Preface
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has greatly changed the management of coronary heart disease (CHD) and in turn, because of the great prevalence of CHD, the scene of cardiology and medicine as a whole, with relevant social implications. No other medical intervention has evolved as rapidly as PCI. However, in order to achieve excellence, many questions remain unresolved.
In the supplement, a panel of experts has elaborated a collection of articles, in which no intention of completeness, as stated in the foreword, is pursued. In contrast, they provide thoughtful insight into the most elusive or conflicting points in PCI. Those conflicting points include adjunctive pharmacological therapy in PCI, strategies to minimize damage in PCI, transfer and canalization aspects, and a focus on special populations like diabetic patients and the elderly. Therefore, this supplement may be a useful bridge between guidelines and clinical practise, offering support in decision-making both for clinicians and interventional cardiologists.
