Preface
Heart failure appears to be the emerging cardiovascular epidemic, in contrast to the decreasing burden from coronary artery disease. Important advances have taken place in the pharmacological treatment for the alleviation of symptoms and prolongation of survival. In this evolving scenario, it is not easy for the clinician to know how to choose and combine all existing useful agents, especially how to tackle different situations such as severe resistant symptoms, preserved left ventricular function, post-myocardial infarction, or elderly patients. Recently, the European Society of Cardiology has updated the 2001 guidelines on the management of chronic heart failure. In this supplement, a panel of experts review the current state of knowledge on pharmacological therapy for heart failure. A special emphasis is given to the use of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), so as to clarify when ARBs can be an alternative or an adjunctive to ACE-inhibitors and beta-blockers.
